Trying to find a pic of a charge/light brigade survivor

Postby hermann on February 12th, 2010, 9:21 am

In Harrogate there is a grave of one of the survivors of the charge of the light brigade Sergeant Major Robert Johnston 8th Hussars. A friend is trying to find a picture of him. He has tried the regimental museum but they want £25 to look and tell him whether they have a picture or not, which at the moment (Out of work self employed builder) he can't afford. Does anyone know any other good sources or contacts for this info. Cheers.

Imperial War Museum, has stuff on Charge of Light Brigade might be worth contacting them to see if they can help.

Don't know where the Harrogate Herald archive is held but he should check the files for December 1882

Found this.

8th if Iam right were apddy pony whackers

if so a lot of their gear went up in flames in 1922 so dont bother with the Regimental museum

Have you tried arrse ?

just checked - 8th is listed as being the King's Royal Irish Hussars.

So echoing what Nige says, don't bother with the regimental museum, it'll be very unlikely that they'll have anything, although do check if they were actually based in Ireland in '22 (would expect them to be). If they were chances are their records went up in smoke, along with all the other Royal Irish regiments when the British got kicked out of Ireland.
