Careful, you may end up with a house full.
Organisers are looking for 500 people to help create a line of light from one side of Britain to the other, along the length of Hadrian’s Wall, on 13th March 2010.
Each of the volunteer ‘Illuminators’ will be part of a small team responsible for lighting one of the 500 individual points of light that will be placed at 250 metre intervals along the route of the 84 mile long Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail.
The first of the lights will be illuminated at Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend in the North East of England. Each of the other lights will then be lit in sequence by the Illuminators, with the line of light reaching Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast about an hour later.
Linda Tuttiett, the Chief Executive of Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd, says: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to be part of this amazing event. We want to give people from all over the country, as well as local people, the chance to get involved. It really will be a once in a lifetime opportunity and something we think people will remember for a very long time.
“All the Illuminators will be supervised by the team that are producing this project as well as our own volunteers who help out along the route of the National Trail and volunteers from other local organisations like the Northumberland National Park Authority.”
The Illuminators will be placed at sites along the route that are appropriate to their level of physical ability and experience, so anyone can get involved. There will be a number of points of light in Newcastle and Carlisle that will be easily accessible. Some other locations along the crags in the central section of the Wall are likely to be manned by people with suitable experience.
John Farquhar-Smith, who is producing the event, says: “This event will obviously be a massive logistical challenge involving a large team of experts and the highly experienced volunteers who work with Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd along the National Trail. The 500 volunteer Illuminators we want to recruit for this event will also play a crucial role in creating the line of light.”
Carol Bell, Head of Programme Development for culture10 at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said, “Our ambition is to involve as many people as possible in this event which celebrates our fantastic landscape, and we encourage audiences to help shape the cultural offer of the region, actively taking part in our festivals and events by ‘doing, not just viewing’.”
All the volunteers will receive a special scroll commemorating their involvement in the event.
Anyone who would like to be one of the Illuminators will need to register on the website at www.illuminatinghadrianswall.com before 22nd February. Illuminators must be aged 18 or over.
For those keen to watch rather than actively participate as an illuminator, two free events will take place, one at Segedunum in Wallsend where the line of light will start and the other at Carlisle in Cumbria, to welcome the light into the North West. A very limited number of tickets will soon be made available for the stewarded viewing points along the route and must be pre-booked via www.illuminatinghadrianswall.com. Please note these countryside viewing points will offer limited opportunities in comparison to the two main events.
